The Association for Individual Development (AID) Living Room, 309 New Indian Trail Court, Aurora, is available 24/7/365 for community members experiencing a mental health crisis.
The Living Room offers a unique alternative to hospitalization for individuals in crisis who can be stabilized without medical intervention. Guests can practice coping skills, access support from a recovery support specialist, stay in a safe and comfortable space, and work toward resolving their crisis.
Those in need are encouraged to call 630-966-4110 or visit the Living Room directly.
Services and support are provided by mental health professionals and recovery support specialists. Recovery support specialists serve as the first point of contact for individuals in crisis. Guests may walk in or be referred by community agencies, hospitals, law enforcement, or other sources.
The Living Room is designed to prioritize the least restrictive level of care for each individual. Staff focus on building immediate rapport, providing emotional support, and assisting with de-escalation through active listening, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention services.
AID staff utilize motivational interviewing to complete assessments to determine the severity of the individual crisis and to determine the appropriateness of the Living Room. Living Room guests have access to distress tolerance, calming, and grounding activities, which include a variety of sensory items to assist individuals during their state of crisis.
Should an individual benefit from it, a quiet room is also available. The Living Room is set up to create a safe, comfortable, home-like environment.
