The city government of Aurora, in collaboration with the Aurora African-American Heritage Advisory Board, and the Aurora Divine 9 Alliance, will be hosts to its inaugural Juneteenth flag-raising next at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19 at One Aurora Plaza, 8 E. Galena Boulevard.
In June 2021, Juneteenth was signed into law as both a federal holiday and State holiday in Illinois, to mark the culmination of a decades-long process to recognize June 19, 1865, as the official end of slavery in the United States of America. Tuesday, Feb. 8, the Aurora City Council voted unanimously to make Juneteenth a City holiday.
As we preserve heritage and promote the future, nominate a trailblazing young leader who is building upon the Juneteenth legacy of culture and commitment to receive the Juneteenth Trailblazer Award.
