Two-hundred leaders and representatives from the Fox River Valley Initiative will meet virtually with the four candidates for Kane County State’s Attorney and County Chairperson from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 20. It will be a strictly non-partisan meeting and not a public forum. The main purpose of this meeting is to gain a commitment from the next County chairperson and State’s attorney to meet and work with the Fox River Valley Initiative if they are elected.
The second half of the meeting will be dedicated to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on our issues agenda: Decriminalizing mental illness and substance use disorder; expansion of affordable housing; gun safety and the reduction of crime guns with Do Not Stand Idly By; and government transparency. For more information on these issues please see the linked folder.
Here’s why we think these two races are important for Kane County:
This is the first contested race for Kane County chairperson in eight years and for the State’s attorney in 10 years where the incumbent is not seeking re-election.
We can advance our locally-rooted issues of concern to our members (not stock political speeches). It is a way for our member institutions to act in a larger way on a large scale around issues connected to their mission and ministries that serve the community.
These are critical opportunities to obtain and share relational power. Both sides of the equation stand to gain.
This is one of the few truly non-partisan ways we can act effectively to build democracy and get past the acrimony and division that is crippling our politics.
We have already met with the candidates and all four are committed to attend. With the ongoing pandemic and few opportunities for public participation in the political process this action stands to be the largest pre-election gathering in Kane County for two of the most important political offices.
