Poem: Labor Day

It’s time to pay attention to some history;
America has earned its greatness honestly.
It is the people who have made this nation great—
It is the people who would formulate our fate.
Its visionaries formed the industries to build,
But they came from the people too, successes billed.
The world was used to labor—down and dirty kind,
Let’s call it drudgery, for that is what you’d find.
The people had to fight to lose that status quo;
To gain respectability for all to know.
Not only did it work, it earned its benefits;
So much so that the nation made a day which fits.
So this is LABOR DAY, your day in every sense,
Give thanks to those who fought to gain good countenance.
But do not do so lightly—as it lights the way
To vast improvements how we live some future day.
