By Mike Eckburg, commander, Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84
The Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 will host its March meeting at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at 1677 Montgomery Rd., Suite 106-108, Aurora.
As we move into the month of March, we begin to see signs of spring and the promise of renewal after the winter months. It is also a time when we pause to recognize and honor several important milestones in our military history and the men and women who have served our Nation with courage and dedication.
Early in the month we recognize the birthday of the U.S. Navy Reserve on U.S. Navy Reserve Birthday (March 3), celebrating the proud tradition of reservists who have answered the call to serve our country for more than a century. Just a few days later, we mark the anniversary of the U.S. Navy Seabees on Seabee Birthday (March 5), honoring the skilled builders and fighters who have played a vital role in military operations around the world.
Friday, March 13, we will observe K‑9 Veterans Day, recognizing the military working dogs and their handlers who have served faithfully in missions ranging from detection and security to search and rescue. Their loyalty and bravery have saved countless lives.
Later in the month, we commemorate Medal of Honor Day Wednesday, March 25. This day honors the recipients of our nation’s highest military decoration for valor and reminds us of the extraordinary acts of bravery performed in defense of freedom.
Finally, Sunday, March 29, we will observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This important day is dedicated to recognizing and thanking the millions of veterans who served during the Vietnam War era. We take time to reflect on their sacrifices and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that their service is never forgotten.
As members of the American Legion family, these observances remind us of our shared mission—to support our veterans, strengthen our communities, mentor our youth, and promote patriotism and honor. Let us continue to carry forward these values in everything we do.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming Post meeting and continuing our work together in service to veterans, our community, and our nation.
Our commitment to our veterans, active-duty service members, and our community remains as strong as ever. The American Legion stands on a proud legacy of service, and it is through the dedication and efforts of our members that this legacy continues.
We encourage everyone to remain connected and participate whenever possible as we continue serving together. As we look ahead to upcoming activities, please watch for an announcement regarding our Golf Committee meeting, as we begin planning another successful golf season.
