The Aurora Public Library District’s (APLD) annual Summer Reading Adventure is back! This program is a great way to keep children and teens motivated to read throughout the summer months and serves as an opportunity for adults to try new things at the Library. Whether you’re a reader or not, the Summer Reading Adventure has something for everyone. Our lineup of activities and programs will help participants of all ages develop their imagination, unleash their creativity, and have fun!
With this year’s theme, “Find Your Voice,” the Aurora Public Library District encourages everyone to celebrate the power of their own voices. Our voices are more than just the sounds we make. They are the words we write, the art we create, and the actions we take, in our daily lives. To participate in this year’s program, registrants will need to complete activities from a provided list. There are fun activities to choose from for the whole family, from kids to teens to adults!
“The Summer Reading Adventure really has something for everyone, from reading to singing, dancing, creating art, and using the Library in fun and creative ways,” said Reader’s Services Coordinator Becky Clark. Standard activities such as “read for 20 minutes” or “attend a Library program” are included, but there are activities such as “create a piece of original art” or “make a music play list based on your life” that we hope will motivate participants to really find their own voices.
Need some motivation? Join us for our Kick-Off Party Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Santori Library Parking Lot. This celebration is an awesome way to welcome summer and get the whole family excited about our Summer Reading Adventure. There will be games, crafts, and free artisan ice cream from La Garrafa, while supplies last. The event’s entertainment will be provided by children’s musician Jim Gill at 11 a.m.! “Jim Gill is an award-winning musician and author specializing in child development, and many of our staff and families are big fans,” said Event and Program Coordinator Ali Lanthrum.
“His unique song-writing style combines word play and movement opportunities, and he’s local, hailing from Oak Park, Ill.. We love how his performance resonates with our Summer Reading Adventure theme, Find Your Voice and we hope that our community will both enjoy it and be inspired!”
If you’re ready to join the Summer Reading Adventure, all you need to do is register online at www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/sra, or visit any Library location, including the Bookmobile, between June 1 and July 31. The program is open to all ages, from babies to adults, and is completely free of charge. After you’ve registered, you can choose to keep track of your activity online, or with a paper log. Once you complete 10 activities, come back to the Library to receive a completion prize! In addition to the Summer Reading Adventure, APLD will be host to a variety of events throughout the Summer. There will be author visits, story times, and workshops for all ages. These events are a great way to supplement the program and to keep you engaged throughout the Summer.
