Just when we thought it was safe to go back in the water, or in this case, a so-called normal life, along comes the evil stepsister of the COVID virus, the Delta Variant, which Trumpers like to call Great Hoax Number 2. LockDown Number 2 may be on its way because Great Hoax Number 2 is rapidly spreading.
Although some of us vaccinated human-types are getting milder cases, the deadly cases are spreading because of the antivaxxers and antimaskers. Those nutty folks. I think it’s interesting that when these jokesters end up in the hospital on a respirator, gasping for air, they beg for the vaccine. Unfortunately, they’re a day late and a dollar short by that time.
I intend to keep wearing a mask because at some point I may be an unknowing COVID carrier and I don’t want to be the cause of infection in an antivaxxer. I’ll leave it to them to infect each other without any help from me. I don’t want to infect any young children. I care about them even if they don’t.
Although, as Americans we’re all free to get sick and die whenever we please, the problem is the antis out there are keeping the virus alive and letting it mutate into something nastier to infect those of us who may not want to purchase a one-way ticket to the afterlife just yet.
Your “freedom” is wreaking havoc on the freedom of the rest of us. You know how it goes: The freedom to wildly swing your fists ends where my freedom to have an unbroken nose begins.
• I have to take a time out this week to note the passing of Herschel Luckinbill, my friend and past president of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club (FVVBC). Herschel was a friend to all and never met a military veteran he didn’t like…even a Marine. I met Herschel when he came to a meeting of the FVVBC about 12 years ago. We were a casually formed social group at the time.
Herschel felt and thought we could be more, and explored ways our group could help veterans in need. He molded us into a cohesive, tax-exempt, organization, spent his days seeking donations, creating events and befriending politicians, all to help current and past veterans and charitable groups, even contributing thousands of dollars of his own when needed, including for his many self-funded Honor Flights. He wanted to fly along as a chaperone and friend to the World War II veterans.
There is so much more I could write about Herschel, but no words can convey how much he was appreciated and how much he will be missed by all of us who knew him.
