Memorial Day not Veterans Day

Just a few thoughts on more than a few topics for our consideration:

•The Fox Valley Music Foundation recruited volunteers to renovate a recent historic building into The Venue, a live music room at 21 S. Broadway, Aurora, and celebrated its fifth anniversary.

•Sports, but community: Fred Weidner is the leader for Aurora Boys Baseball Hall of Fame which will induct four members Saturday, June 8 at Andrews Field in Garfield Park: Rick Hollarbush, Dave Randall, Steve Moga, Bill Frantzen. There will be games at 4 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. and the inductees will be honored in a ceremony at 6 p.m. between the games.

•The Memorial Day tributes Monday, May 27 in all of our communities are somber and serious.

Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day which will be November 11. Veterans Day is for veterans, living and dead. Memorial Day started out for Civil War dead, however, these days is a memorial for any family member who has died.

•We will have more in next week’s edition, however the Paul Simon-Jim Edgar Statesmanship Award presented to an elected State or local government official, has open nominations. Nominations, which opened April 1, will close June15.

•The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is dedicating Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) services for teen drivers each Saturday during the Summer from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 1 through August 31. The aim is help teens qualify for their driver’s license. Teen services hours will be included at the following sites: Addison, Aurora, Belvidere, Bridgeview, Des Plaines, Elgin, Joliet, Lake Zurich, Plano, and St. Charles.

•The Indianapolis 500 is not an easy task. The sync has to be at work, with a smooth car, skilled driver, and a coordinated team in every aspect. Few drivers win more than once, however, Josef Newgarden of the USA is the champion both this year and last year.

•The Chicago Bears will play their first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 1 in Houston and only one of four preseason games will be at home. The Bears will play at Houston in a regular-season game in week two, Sunday, Sept. 15.
