Memorial Day observances fill our communities. The following list has varied activities. All are designed to properly pay respects to the military members who died in action and once served and have passed. All of the observances will be Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, unless otherwise noted:
Kane County
• Aurora: The downtown parade will begin at noon and end at Downer Place and River Street after 10 a.m.. Vets Week is Saturday through Memorial Day.
• Batavia: Walter Backman interment service by Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 at River Hills Cemetery on Route 25, 2 p.m..
• Annual program at VFW Post 1197, 645 S. River Street, will begin at 10 a.m..
• Elgin: Memorial Day programs will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa Street, 8:45 a.m.; Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 U.S. Route 20, 9:15 a.m.; Elgin Veterans Memorial Park, 274 N. Grove Avenue, 9:45 a.m.; Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Boulevard, 11 a.m..
• Geneva: Beginning at 10 a.m. the American Legion Fox River Geneva Post 75 will have its annual Memorial Day Parade from the Geneva Train Station to West Side Cemetery.
• Montgomery: Annual service will be conducted by VFW Post 7452 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery, 121 N. River Street. Complimentary lunch will follow.
• St. Charles: Flag-raising at Baker Community Center at 6 a.m., Boys Scouts will place flags on all of the cemeteries in the community, parade at 10 a.m. and start at 6th and Main. A memorial service will take place at 10:45 a.m. at the Freedom Shrine, west of the St. Charles Police Department.
Kendall County
• Plano: Leon Burson American Legion Post 395 will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park, up Center Street from Main Street, and at Memorial to Little Rock Township Cemetery at 11 a.m..
DuPage County
• Elmhurst: The annual parade through downtown will step off at 9:30 a.m. at York and Third Streets.
• Lisle: Parade and ceremony in downtown will begin at 11 a.m. at the Lisle Junior High School.
• Lombard: Program will begin at noon at the Sunken Garden at Common Park near Grace and Maple Streets.
• Naperville: There will be a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall at 7:45 a.m. followed by services at Veterans park, 8:15 a.m.; Burlington Square park, 8:35 a.m.; St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, 9 a.m.; and the GAR Monument, 9:45 a.m.. Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and American Legion Post 43 will be hosts to the parade which will step off from Jackson and West Streets at 10:30 a.m..
• Warrenville: Services at cemeteries will be at 9 a.m. to noon followed by a Healing Field of Honor with more than 500 flags at the VFW Post 8081.
• Wheaton: Battle of Cantigny ceremony at 10 a.m. and activities for kids from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at First Division Museum, Cantigny Park, 1s151 Winfield Road. Hours will be 7 a.m. to sunset.
• West Chicago: Observance at Oakwood Cemetery from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m..
Will County
• Plainfield: The Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10:30 a.m. from Ira Jones Middle School, 15320 Wallin Drive. The parade will go to Settlers’ Park where a ceremony will be held.
