The Naperville City Council voted 6-1 against a proposal to build the Karis Critical dater center at the Tuesday, Jan. 20 City Council meeting.
A packed City Council meeting with most attendees speaking against the plan, heard from representatives of the building trades seeking the Council to approve the proposal.
The proposal included a 36-megawatt, 211,00-square-foot data center with 24 diesel generators on the property at 1960 Lucent Lane, Naperville, the Nokia property (Formerly Alcatel-Lucent:Bell Laboratories.
For months residents rallied together against the proposal.
The data center’s proposed location at the northwest corner of Naperville and Warrenville Roads is surrounded by multiple neighborhoods, Herrick Lake, Danada Forest Preserves, and the Sensory Garden Playground, which is a regional park created by a community partnership for children with autism and other sensory issues. In addition, there are a variety of local businesses, restaurants, and hotels in close proximity.
