If you are looking for a unique and enriching experience to broaden your understanding of Native American culture, history, and values, the Aurora Public Library District has a program for you! The Santori Library is proud to welcome back local storyteller Gerald Savage, also known as Chief White Winnebago, at 3 p.m. Monday, July 14 for an afternoon of traditional stories from the Ho-Chunk people.
Chief White Winnebago (whose formal native name is Ho-Chunk Ska Ga) is a tribal elder and Bear Clan Chief with the Ho-Chunk Nation. He grew up with his grandparents, Chief Walks with the Wind and Stands on a Cloud, who raised him in tribal ways. As Chief, he honors his ancestors through storytelling and cultural education in appearances all over Illinois. He is a 2025 Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speaker and an Illinois America 250 Commissioner who gives a face and a voice to Indigenous people.
In November of last year, Chief White Winnebago presented a library program targeted for adults titled The Reintroduction of Native Americans into Illinois. He received such positive feedback that we were eager to invite him back. “We wanted to offer a program suitable for our young customers as well,” said Library assistant, Colleen. “This program will be interactive with music, magic and storytelling all woven together.” It’s a great way for kids, teens, and adults to explore Native American culture in a fun and engaging way.
The goal of this, and many library programs, is to create space for connection, learning, and respect. “By offering this program, we go beyond providing resources and become active participants in cultural preservation, education, and community building,” said Library assistant, Ratna. Through storytelling, Chief White Winnebago is keeping important traditions alive, while opening opportunities for the community to learn from and engage with Indigenous voices.
If you’re curious about Native American history, culture, and traditions—or just love a good story—this is the perfect event for you.
