Oswegoland Woman’s Civic Club, old and new members, will join together at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 25 at Lakeview Grill in Yorkville for dinner, to celebrate its 90th year of community service to Oswegoland. Please call Judy Smith, 630-554-8097, to make a reservation by Sunday.
The Club always has had an emphasis on child welfare. Janet Tripp started a dental fund for children in need. OWCC was instrumental in starting the first Oswego Public Library and then helped maintain it for 30 years and purchased furniture for the children’s area when the library moved to its present location in 1964.
In 1968 the Club purchased and installed playground equipment at East View Elementary School and Village Green Park. The Club started Picture Lady in 1971 providing funds and pictures and presenters to East View, then Long Beach, Boulder Hill, and Old Post Elementary Schools. Present day, working with home and school associations, the club contributes funding to participating elementary schools in what is called Art Appreciation (name changed in 2007).
In 1976, OWCC joined with the rest of the community to help restore the Little White Schoolhouse, rather than have it torn down. The Club donated funds for a bell tower and in 1980, funds for the museum room.
Judy Smith started a conservation project at the “Welcome to Oswego” sign when it was relocated to Tyler and Washington Streets and keeps the area continuously beautified.
The Club has participated for years in Christmas Walk selling homemade cookies and Wine on the Fox beautiful baskets for raffles. Over the years, these fundraisers have funded scholarships to high school seniors and most recently Summer program scholarships for eighth grade junior high students.
Other contributions include to Mutual Ground, Celebrate Differences founded by member Rebecca Christiansen, CASA, Tiller’s including birthday gifts provided by member Virginia Buhrmaster, Hands of Hope for Dreyer cancer patients started by deceased member Sylvia Johnson, and Kendall County Community Food Pantry.
