Determined. Dedicated. Disciplined to be fit for life.
That was the mantra shared by fitness guru Ernestine Shepherd, 81, in Aurora Saturday.
Speaking on “Age is Nothing But a Number,” the Baltimore resident was the keynote speaker at the 13th annual community health fair at Aurora Christian School sponsored by Aurora African-American Health Coalition.
During her 45-minute presentation, Shepherd performed pushups and other exercises. After receiving a standing ovation, she took audience questions.
Shepherd is the record-holder for the world’s oldest female bodybuilder. The Guinness World Records awarded Shepherd the title in 2010.
Shepherd recounted how she began working out at Baltimore’s Coppin State College (now university) in 1956 after she and her sister became displeased with their looks in bathing suits.
After her sister died of a brain aneurysm, Ernestine decided to work out even harder in her sister’s memory.
Shepherd said she trains vigorously Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but does cardiovascular daily.
She is recognized by her colorful outfits emblazoned with her mantra and high-heel athletic shoes. She takes time to lead fitness classes for seniors at her church and a fitness center.
Married for 61 years, she is the mother of a 60-year-old son and a 21-year-old grandson.
Shepherd said, “It is never too late to become physically fit. Life is a race against destiny, but we are all given that one moment in time to be the best we can be.”
