Poem: In Passing

Share this article:

In life, we forge the chains which either link or bind,
We like to think we’ve done our best, the future sure to find,
But we are not the judge—that will be done by those in time.
Who knew us not, oblivious to what we had to climb.
You will be judged on what you leave, no personal asides;
Unless someone in judging finds you curious besides.
That curiosity will be to find what made you tick;
Whatever that assumption is, a safe bet it will stick.
In other words, you are not living for what happens when;
It’s safe to make this point—you will not pass this way again.
But truly, that does not relieve responsibility;
So influence will carry on, which is your legacy.
But how you look at, act toward, treat those you meet,
Will be the way you will be judged—the way you treat.
Your innate influence on others, good or bad,
Determines your whole legacy…glad or sad.
