The city government of Batavia has been made aware of a planned protest to take place at City Hall at noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 3. No permit for this event has been granted because it was not timely requested and such an event would violate the requirements of the governor’s current restrictions on size of gatherings allowed during this phase of the COVID-19 reopening plan. However, the City may not interfere with citizens’ constitutional right to peacefully gather and exercise free speech.
The organizer has been cooperative in working with the Batavia Police Department in trying to ensure the safety of all who are attending this event. If you are not participating, it is advised that you avoid the downtown area during the time of the protest. Businesses may wish to close at their discretion. The City is aware that similar events in other cities have devolved into more serious and illegal behavior and we will do the utmost that is within our power to be ready for such a possibility and to protect public safety.
