Pushing the Envelope Farm, 1700 Averill Road in Geneva, will be host to pumpkin-composting from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Nov. 7.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Pumpkins, squash, gourds, hay bales and corn stalks will be accepted for composting. The service is free. Donors are asked to remove candles, yarn hair, stickers, googly eyes, plastic ears, and any other non-organic embellishments.
A press release from Northern Illinois Food Bank, with a west suburban center near Envelope Farm, announced the event.
Pumpkins are 90% water and full of nutrients good for the soil. Food scraps and organic materials in landfills are the third largest producers of methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.
