St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Aurora celebrated annual Quilt Weekend Saturday and Sunday.
More than 100 quilts handmade by congregants, girls’ dresses and more than 50 baby-care kits assembled by members were blessed at Saturday and Sunday worship services.
Reverend Will Fisher, interim senior pastor, officiated assisted by Rev. Paul Kopka, interim associate pastor. Congregants laid hands on the quilts to bless them. Lydia’s Piecemakers, a church women’s group, made the quilts and baby-care kits. Dresses were sewn by members of Naomi Circle women’s group.
Donations go to Lutheran World Relief to aid needy persons in refugee camps and in emergency situations around the world.
A prayer quilt is a continuing ministry of Lydia’s Piecemakers. At the request of a prospective recipient or a sponsor, the Piecemakers will place a lap-size quilt in the narthex as a prayer request.
Congregants are invited to offer a prayer for the recipient while tying a knot on the quilt. The completed quilt will be available for pickup or delivery to the recipient to provide comfort, warmth and a tangible token of love from St. Mark’s a church spokesman said.
At 27 S. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora, St. Mark’s holds worship service at 5 p.m. on Fridays and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.
