John Savage, president, Aurora Public Library Board of Directors, issued the following statement Sunday, April 22:
On behalf of the Aurora Public Library Board of Directors and staff members, I sincerely apologize to the community for the offensive display in the library’s exhibit this weekend. Once I became aware of the situation, I had it removed immediately. It should never have been on display at any of the Aurora Public Library branches.
We are very proud of the Aurora Public Library’s tradition of promoting literacy, learning, and leadership in an equitable and inclusive way. We have a board of directors comprised of individuals who are deeply committed to our community and staff members who go above and beyond to provide a meaningful experience for our patrons.
We fell far short of the mark this time, plain and simple. For that, I am truly sorry.
When I read the words in that display, my heart ached. I was disgusted by the language and saddened by the fact that every person who read it could believe this was condoned by the Aurora Public Library because it was allowed to be on display in our main branch.
I am angry that still in 2018 these examples of hate and prejudice are alive and well, and now being shrouded under the banner of art. Whatever the artist’s intention, this will not be tolerated in our community.
I am committed to rectifying the matter as quickly as possible. We have removed the display and will be conducting an internal review of both the people and process that allowed this to happen.
The Aurora Public Library is a place for all members of our community to experience amazing learning opportunities in a safe and secure environment.
