Dear editor;
I have been thinking about gun rights in the United States and see that we have grown out of many of the needs for arms. Today, instead of the majority of the population needing guns to secure food, we have turned them on each other. I know of no other species that is so bent on destroying its members.
Guns used for controlled sports such as trap shooting, hunting, or farm protection from unwanted animal predators, still have a purpose today. But let us consider the use of an AR-15 (assault rifle). What purpose does it have to defend mankind from anything? It does nothing but tear individuals to shreds and promote mass killing. To have one for some identity reason is a false notion. We need to get AR-15s out of the public’s hands.
In doing it we are not going down the slippery slope of taking all guns away, but it would stop unnecessary, brutal, killings of humans and animals.
We need to take a look at ourselves because we claim we have evolved. Is fearing the other person to the extent that we need an AR-15 to eliminate the other person an evolution of humanity in the right direction?
We must support those men and women in the U.S. Congress who are in favor of banning assault rifles.
Let us show the world we have evolved into decency.
