Dear editor;
As I watch the making of a new Pope unfold, I keep wondering what Jesus Christ would say if he were here today.
One might assume he would adamantly condemn the adulations being paid to the rock he built his church upon while more than 700 million of his children are experiencing hunger throughout the world and more than 100 million have been killed in 20th Century wars. He would probably further question why the catholic church, and all churches for that matter, have not sold its priceless artifacts valued into the billions to feed the hungry and to help solve problems that plague his people.

He might further ask why the men dressed in scarlet capes, the cardinals, are not more known for being men of service rather than as “Princes of the Church”.
I truly believe that the catholic church, as well as all churches, need to get back to the basics of what Christ envisioned and that is to bring people into a relationship with God at a level which the masses can relate to, not at the level of pomp and ceremony we have been witnessing.
Such wisdom should also apply to all world leaders. When they encounter trials and tribulations, they should ask themselves “what would Jesus Christ say or do if he were here today”? Following what Christ taught us and lived by would surely make this world a better place in which to live.
