Dear editor;
I find it a fun hobby to watch those who proudly display their distorted thinking patterns. The latest example is the notion that jury duty is a personal inconvenience. Justice, fair and equal, is just not worth the bother? Some of the reasons Ms Goetsch gives in April 15 Reader’s Commentary, Jury Duty suggestion: One person. Reasons for not wanting to drive to the courthouse are the potential for road rage, COVID vaccination centers, food distribution centers, and violence. Sounds like there is one missing. Did you forget about the boogie-man living in your bedroom closet? Get real. As the philosopher said, “Of all the terrible things in my life, most of them never happened.” The comment that the pay is illegal is out right laughable. Who set the custom that four hours is the minimum one must be paid. Jury duty pay is not a wage and therefore not subject to any minimum wage laws. The pay is compensation for expenses. Jury duty cannot be a salaried position because our forefathers were wise enough to not make honest judgment a profitable business; profit motives distort reason and honesty.
Ms Goetsch states, “There may be a thought that retirees ought to be volunteering…” Then begs to differ with that point of view. In all of my years, and with all of the jury summons I have received, never once did I get the impression that summons were issued based on the age of the recipient.
Based on some of the previous letters by this lady, I would hazard to guess that if an issue does not directly affect her, she has no interest in it. That distortion is called solipsism. I make reference back to a letter in March 2020 when she complained about the inconvenience of answering the telephone as well as the letter in August 2020 when she urged everyone to get on her bandwagon to have property tax information more accessible for her convenience.
All I ask of this lady is that she continue writing her letters. They are fun to read.
