Aurora residents can do their part to help save the Earth by recycling electronics for free, but registration is required.
Online registration for the popular Spring Electronics Recycling Drive-Thru opens today on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, 2204 at 9 a.m.
The first 2,000 Aurora residents who register will secure a coveted spot for the drive-thru, which will be held Saturday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Route 59 Metra Train Station.
Registered residents can bring up to two television screens of any size and an unlimited amount of other approved electronics.
Online registration is available at www.aurora-il.org/Electronics2024.
Aurora offers two free recycling drive-thru events each year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Generally, registration capacity is reached in 24 hours.
During the last drive-thru held in the Fall, more than 1,200 television sets were dropped off, and over 30 tons of electronics, also known as e-waste, filled five semi-trailers to be disposed of properly.
E-waste often ends up in landfills, where it can take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose. This not only takes up valuable space but also poses environmental and health risks. When e-waste decomposes, it releases toxic substances into the environment, contaminating soil, water, and air.
