It is an honor for us to host RDML Sands to give us an update on how this global pandemic is affecting our armed forces, especially as they are going through boot camp at Great Lakes.
April 25, 2019 Rear Admiral Sands assumed command of the Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL. Rear Adm. Sands is a native of Farmington, Connecticut. and graduated from the Naval Academy with a BS in Oceanography. He earned an MS in Military Strategy and Planning from the Joint Advanced Warfighting School in Norfolk, VA. Serving as a surface warfare officer in the Navy and subsequently transferring into the Navy Special Warfare community (SEAL), Jamie has served in Europe, the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Jamie served as the Commander of SEAL Team EIGHT from 2008 to 2010.
He is the first SEAL to take the helm of the command of NSTC. NSTC supports naval accessions training for 98 percent of the Navy’s new officers and enlisted Sailors. This training includes the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at more than 160 colleges and universities across the country, Officer Training Command (OTC) in Newport, Rhode Island, Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy’s only boot camps, as well as the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) citizenship development program at more than 600 high schools worldwide.
Post 84 strives to create an inviting and accepting environment for all Veterans, hosting RDML Sands, it will give Veterans, especially Navy Veterans like me, a glimpse into what the Navy has evolved into and bring back good memories of our service. It will also inform Veterans of other branches and civilians just how much training new sailors go through.
