U.S. senator, Dick Durbin, Illinois, will make an appearance in support of a complete count in Aurora.
“You Count: Census 2020” is an informational program that will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Santori Library Room 224. The 11 a.m. program in English will feature congressman Bill Foster, representative Barbara Hernandez, and Dr. Brian Caputo, co-chair of the Aurora Complete Count Committee. The 1 p.m. program in Spanish will feature representative Karina Villa, Maria Manzo, senior outreach coordinator for congressman Foster, and Dan Barreiro, chief community services officer for Aurora.
Laura Bedolla, Census Bureau manager for Kane County, will provide an explanation of the process of how U.S. Census data is gathered. The panelists will speak to how the data impacts municipal, state, and federal governmental decisions. Audience questions will be solicited. Attendees can apply for Census Taker positions.
The program is being offered by the League of Women Voters Aurora Area and the Aurora Public Library. “A mission of the League is to provide educational programs to increase our civic understanding and participation in government. Being counted in the decennial census and voting are two civic actions open to us. We hope that this program will increase understanding about the how the Census is conducted and why it matters,” said Denise Elsbree, vice president for the LWV Aurora Area.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters Aurora Area Chapter includes Aurora, Sugar Grove, North Aurora, Montgomery and Oswego.
