Senior Services Associates, a nonprofit with offices in Aurora and Yorkville, will offer free income tax preparation help.
The public is invited. The service, called AARP Tax Aide, is in cooperation with Internal Revenue Service under its Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. There are no age or income limits and AARP membership is not required.
Trained Tax Aide volunteers can e-file long forms with itemized deductions but are not authorized to file complex returns, including rental or farm income and self-employment businesses with a loss.
The Aurora office, at 2111 Plum Street, serves southern Kane County; the Yorkville office, at 908 Game Farm Road, serves Kendall County.
Distribution of tax information packets started January 2. Appointments for in-person tax preparation are scheduled at packet pickup. Counseling, return preparation and e-filing will take place by appointment only from Thursday, Feb. 6, through Thursday, April 10.
Aurora office appointments are Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Yorkville office appointments are on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m..
Information forms must be completed before appointments. Tax documents required for appointments are 2023 tax return, property tax bill, year-end brokerage statement, photo ID, 1099 forms, 1095A forms, blank check for direct deposit refund and Social Security card or other official documentation for self and dependents.
Estimated preparation time is 90 minutes.
