Seth Groom leads Marmion to State; honor roll in listing

State high school track and field meets form the prize for the elite competitors, sudden end of the season.
• Seth Groom (see page 10)of Marmion Academy won four sectional events at the Class 2A Genoa-Kingston Sectional last week and Thursday through Saturday takes dead aim of State success. He won first places in the long jump, triple jump, high jump, and the 200 meters. He won all four events in Chicago Catholic League championships at Loyola Academy May 12. He set the Loyola stadium record in the long jump, 23 feet, one inch. He will compete next year in track and field at the University of Iowa. Marmion won the sectional meet with 96 points and the team had five other State qualifiers: Andrew Saloga in the pole vault, 13-02; Sean Galle, 3200 in 9:46.52; Anthony Zangler in the 800, 2:02.19; Michael Ranzone in the 1600, 4:29.78; and the 4×800 relay in 8:01.
• Riley Ammenhauser of Neuqua Valley High School won the State triple jump last weekend with a jump of more than 40 feet, one of only eight girls in State meet history to accomplish the goal. See pages 1 and 10. Her father, Jim, is an Oswego High School graduate.
• Oswego athletic director Darren Howard earlier this week announced that John Carlson will be the girls head basketball coach. Carlson has been on the staff at Oswego for 18 years.
• Class 3A boys track and field sectional champions: Huntley, Glenbard West, and Hoffman Estates edged past Batavia.
• Class 1A track and field boys sectional champions included Westmont, led by Kyle Casper with championships in both hurdles and the triple jump.
• High school honor roll tournament champions include: Naperville Central boys water polo won the State championship Saturday at Stevenson with a 13-5 victory over Fenwick in the championship. Naperville North girls took third place in the water polo tournament at Stevenson.
• Aurora Central fell in a Class 1A girls soccer super-sectional match to U-High Chicago. Immaculate Conception fell to North Shore Country Day. In Class 3A regional final, Naperville Central’s soccer team defeated Waubonsie Valley, 3-2, in two overtimes.
