For Aurora Public Library District (APLD) Spanish language programmer Mariana Guerrero, Hispanic Heritage Month is, she said, “an opportunity to share with my community my culture, my traditions, my food and my people. I am proud of my culture every day, but in September I get to share that orgullo (pride) even more!”
Artist Pat Nunez (whose exhibit, “Mexico, Memories of Our Town,” will be on display at the Santori Library Atrium September 15 through October 15) observed that this sense of cultural pride grows when one migrates from home: “When we are born and raised in Mexico City, everything seems natural and common, but when we migrate, all the colors, flavors, and textures become magical, and evoke millions of memories.”
We hope customers who are familiar with the games, crafts, music, and dances featured in our Hispanic Heritage Month programs have just as magical of a time revisiting the traditions they grew up with. For others, we hope they’ll delight in learning and have an experience of something new.
