Even though there is a tendency to make separate our activities as though they were not part of the whole, the contrary is more visible. Sports do not contain an identity unto their own. There are examples:
• Jesse “The Law” Torres is a former Aurora policeman and a former boxer. He is retired in each case. He combines sports and youth work in the Jesse “The Law” Torres Boxing Club. Saturday his club was a sponsor for a boxing card at the Prisco Community Center. See the photo below and see photo here.
The boxing card had its aim: “Knocking Out Parkinson’s disease”. The admission price fights Parkinson’s.
Torres long has run the club. He said simply: “I do it for the kids.” The kids need the outlet, discipline, focus, and purpose in their formative years.
• Herschel Luckinbill, president of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, received a salute as Hero of the Game at a Chicago White Sox game last week. See page photo. There is a connection.
• Memorial Day has a connection to us all. Soldiers died defending our way of life. Observance turnouts Monday were good, respectful, cheerful, yet, somber.
