August is National Dog Month, a month-long celebration of the most commonly owned and lovable pet recognized during the dog days of Summer. We wanted to share how a St. Charles resident, Missy Young, has been saving dogs in her community and throughout Illinois and uniting them with their forever homes.
In 2017, Missy and her best friend, Niccalina Santilli, met at a local rescue shelter and shortly after created their own rescue. With the help of volunteers and fosters, the two began their rescue efforts focusing on dogs that are 25 pounds or less and giant breeds such as Great Danes. The women decided to create a Facebook page, Tiny N Tall Rescue Inc., to promote their new nonprofit. This page sparked numerous events, fundraisers, and several groups including TNT Approved Adopters, TNT Subscribers, Tiny N Tall Volunteers, TNT Happily Ever After and more.
“When we began our rescue, we didn’t have a physical location or a website to share information and communicate what we were doing,” said Missy Young. “We turned to Facebook, which has been instrumental to our success and has helped tremendously in creating this community. Now we are able to share live videos and post about the new rescues so that by the time we return with the dogs, there are more than enough fosters and adopters waiting to take them in. So far, we have saved over 1,400 dogs in only four years with the help of Facebook.”
The Tiny N Tall community grew and with the rescue of more dogs, the women realized they needed a physical location to care for the dogs when they wait for the adoption process. Now they are hoping to open a rescue shelter in the coming months and have been using Facebook Fundraisers to help them meet their goal.
