The St. Charles Veterans Center was host to mayor Raymond P. Rogina Monday, Dec. 9, 2019 for a presentation and Mayoral Proclamation to declare December 10 “Betty Butler Day” in St. Charles, to honor the WWII veteran, American Legion Post 342 chaplain and one of the oldest living Waves in the United States, St. Charles resident Betty Butler.
The Key to the City was presented during the ceremony. Members from all four veterans posts attended the dinner event: VFW Post 5036; American Legion Post 342; AMVETS Post 603; and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 693; and American Legion Auxiliary. Unfortunately, Betty was unable to attend the event, due to a health emergency. For that reason, a video of the event was created by sponsors, IDT Photo, David and Jane Mercer. Later, Monday, Dec. 21, Legion Post 342 Commander Richard Zawislak presented the video and awards to Betty at her residence, Bickford of St. Charles Assisted Living. Commander Zawislak was assisted by Veterans Center community liaison Vanessa Bell-LaSota.
