At the April 9 meeting of the Woman’s Club of Aurora at Belle Salle Banquets, Kristen Ziman, chief of the Aurora Police Department (APD), was presented with a $500 check to honor APD first responders by Club president Cathy Martin. Chief Ziman thanked members for the outpouring of support from the Club and that of the entire community. It was indicated that these funds would go toward the purchase of protective equipment. The Chief received a standing ovation for her superior management of the tragic situation at the Henry Pratt warehouse and all that followed in its wake.
Club members brought items for babies and gave monetary donations for Healthy Families, Aurora site. Peer worker Kyesha Meeks was a guest and thanked the Club for the large donation. It has been an ongoing project of the Woman’s Club for 24 years in coordination with Child Abuse Prevention Month. Earlier this month 150 Blue Pinwheels were “planted” on the south lawn of Mutual Ground in Aurora to signify awareness of the need for happy and healthy childhoods for every child. Mutual Ground has placed teal ribbons around their Oak Street property in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness. Too often domestic violence and child abuse are inter-related.
Tuesday of last week, a conservation and environmental report, along with presentation boards and displays gave recognition to National Arbor Day April 22 and to Earth Day April 26. The Club voted $500 for presentation to southern Illinois Shawnee National Forest for tree seedlings and a bench made from recycled plastic.
Staff members from Habitat for Humanity presented a program on the process and the work of Habitat in the community and stressed that everyone can make a difference through financial support and volunteering to the mission of Fox Valley Habitat to make places to call home.
The Woman’s Club meets on the second Tuesdays at noon at Belle Salle Banquets, 1920 East New York Street for lunch, program, and a brief meeting. Guests are welcome, but reservations are necessary. For membership information contact Dawn at 630-585-1137.
