Duly noted in our sports whirl:
• Championships continue to be determined in the State high school Spring tournaments. The next two weekends will conclude the State championship chase. Last weekend Batavia captured its first track and field State championship. See page 8. Hinsdale Central captured the boys tennis State championship in larger Class 2A. Naperville Central and Jacobs were tied for eighth place. In Class 1A, Benet Academy took second place behind Chicago Latin and Marmion Academy in Aurora was in a tie for eighth place.
In view are State tournaments for baseball, girls softball, girls soccer, and boys volleyball. See below.
• First, the individual awards have been revealed for the Waubonsee Community College Spring sports. In addition, three-sport athlete, Taylor Wyeth, of Aurora was chosen recipient of the year-round Vermillion and Gold Award. She is a graduate of West Aurora High School. She was the No. 1 singles and doubles in tennis; was a member of the successful women’s basketball team which won 23 games, and, in softball batted .384 with 12 stolen bases and was the starter at third base. She will continue academics and tennis at Central College in Pella, Iowa.
Men’s basketball players, Cooper Larsen and Joey Niesman, were named Sophomore Male Athlete of the Year and Freshman Athlete of the Year, respectively. Amy Flores was named Female Athlete of the Year.
• High School remaining Spring sports State tournament championships June 3-4 (Friday/Saturday): Class 1A/2A baseball in Peoria; Class 1A/2A in girls softball in Peoria; Class 2A/3A girls soccer at North Central College in Naperville; boys volleyball at Hoffman Estates High School, to include Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East in the semifinals.
