Members of the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley (DCFV) were given a very informative presentation Wednesday, April 10, by Bill Catching, Aurora Township supervisor, regarding history of township government in Illinois, and current services provided by the Aurora Township for seniors.
DCFV vice president of program, Chuck Nelson, introduced our guest speaker, stating, “Bill Catching graduated from Medill School of Journalism, at Northwestern University in Evanston in 1990. Bill was a reporter for The Beacon-News for eight years, served as assistant chief of staff for mayor David Stover, and was director of development for the Fox Valley United Way. Bill is a marketing consultant and serving his third term as Aurora Township supervisor, and previously served on the Township’s Board of Trustees 2008-2013. Since 2020, he has served as an elected board member of the Township Supervisors of Illinois.”
Mr. Catching gave a short history of Township government in Illinois and stated, “Southern Illinois was settled by the French, who didn’t use a township type of government. Northern Illinois was settled by the English, who were familiar with township government, thus we began using the English version. The Illinois Constitution in 1848 allowed township governments to control roads, bridges, set the base for taxes, and help the poor. There are 1,425 townships in Illinois, and most townships are approximately six square miles.” He went on to say “The Aurora Township has a five-million dollar budget, which funds the Aurora Township Youth Center, that provides after school and Summer programs. The township also maintains 26 miles of roadway, provides rental assistance, handyman services, lawn mowing, and a Ride in Kane program, including a VNA shuttle”.
