General special days are more prevalent at this time of the year, late April into May: April 22 each year is Earth Day, April 28 is Workers’ Memorial Day, May 1 has various designations to include International Workers Day and May Day. Actually, the calendar is full of special designated days, often several for each day.
In essence we can make each day special in our lives and do not have to depend on the calendar.
However, to explore those special designated days, April 22 was chosen for its placement between college Spring breaks and finals weeks, so that participation could be maximized, according to EarthDay.org. Initially, it was called the “National Teach-In on the Crisis of the Environment,” according to Nelson’s Earth Day In 1969, as a U.S. senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, came up with one of the most powerful ideas of his time: Earth Day. Inspired by the teach-ins dealing with the Vietnam War, Earth Day was an instant success, drawing 20 million participants the first year in 1970. A handful of hard-core, self-described, tough guys poked fun at the first Earth Day in 1970 as frivolous. We know better. We must honor and take care of the Earth if we want it to last. Earth Day should be every day in common ways to help the Earth survive for many generations. Workers’ Memorial Day is in a similar spirit as Earth Day.
