I’m always asked “How are you?”, to which I will say:
“Better than yesterday, not as good as tomorrow.”
To me, that isn’t being “smart” in any way,
No vanity intent, or “play on words” to borrow.
Of course, I could say “Fine!”, which you expect to hear,
But does that tell you anything like being factual?
I do the best that I know how, in being clear;
To be as close as I know how in being actual.
Of course, what I may be today is not revealed.
“Better than yesterday” means what? Like you’d be knowing?
But then the next phrase spells improvement, angst will yield.
At least, that points to the direction I am going.
However, if you think that I am out of line,
That what you’re saying, after all, is just a greeting,
Then, as you wish, pretend that what I said is “Fine!”
I would not want to spoil or jeopardize our meeting.
