The Chicago Cubs at this writing are in fifth place of the six teams seeking postseason play in the National League. There are more than five weeks remaining to the end of the regular season. Much still can happen and likely there will be a change or two in the dynamics. The Cubs have played well the last month. The objective is not easy: Continue to play well. Because of the various factors in baseball few teams play well all season in Major League Baseball in 162 regular-season games.

The less written on the Chicago White Sox the better. Disppointment is defined by the Sox in their 27 games under .500.

  • High school and college sports are on the horizon. Football will begin Thursday, Aug. 24. The other Fall sports have started to include boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls swimming and diving, girls tennis, girls volleyball, and boys soccer. If we can ease past the 100-degree this week good weather should be available for most Fall sports.
  • In week two of high school football one of the top games is projected to be Lincoln-Way East in New Lenox at Batavia in a 7 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 1. The game one Chicago area daily newspaper, the Chicago Sun-Times this week in team previews rated Batavia the No. 3 team in the Chicago area and Lincoln-East No. 2, which accounts basically for a toss-up. It is expected to be a good game. What often is missed during the course of a season are injuries and the unexpected. That’s why they play the games.

Another game of note in week two should be perennial power Chicago’s Loyola Academy at Naperville North, 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1.

Some of top conferences in football are the usual suspects, DuKane, DuPage, West Suburban Silver, Southwest Prairie West, and on occasion the Upstate Eight Conference.

Because of the full nine-game schedule in the Upstate Eight, one of its members, East Aurora High School, will not play crosstown rival and historic foe, West Aurora High School, a member of the Southwest Prairie West.

The two Oswego teams will play two of three teams in District 204 in week one, Oswego East at Waubonise Valley and Oswego at Neuqua Valley. Geneva will play at the other District 204 school, Metea Valley.
