Eighty percent of the states in America have a fair, graduated, rate income tax, and Illinois should, too, according to Jean Pierce. This system would tax higher income levels at a higher rate than lower income levels. Pierce will present the case for a fair tax at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 110 S. 2nd Street, Geneva. She serves as co-chair of the League of Women Voters of Illinois Issues Committee, which has advocated for a fair, graduated, rate income tax since the 1970s.

In the meantime, between 1979 and 2015, after inflation, all of the income growth in our country went to the top 10%. Pierce will show that the economy will grow and the State will gain much-needed revenue when lower income earners pay less in taxes and the highest income earners pay more.
