Messenger Public Library of North Aurora will be host to a virtual Kwanzaa celebration through January 2, 2021. It will feature Chicago storytellers Kucha Brownlee and Baba Tony Brown, the program will be one hour of stories, songs, and movement appropriate for all ages.
This pre-Kwanzaa celebration features storytellers D. Kucha Brownlee & Baba Tony Brown in a highly energetic performance introducing the symbols and principles of Kwanzaa. During Kwanzaa, we celebrate the first fruits, which are children. During this time, and in this performance we learn about the seven principles of Kwanzaa, called Nguzo Saba. These principles are unity, self-determination, collective work, and responsibility, co-operative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. This diverse celebration will be accompanied by African drumming, shekere playing, and enhanced by audience participation, including singing and playing instruments.
Kucha Brownlee brings more than 25 years of performing to the storytelling arena. She has sung and danced across the Midwest, receiving formal training at the Chicago Conservatory. In storytelling, Kucha combines her experience in the arts with her formal education, a BA in English and a MBA in management. Kucha’s performance art includes stories from folktales and fables to personal stories, accompanied by singing and shekere playing. She is a teacher of storytelling.
Baba Tony Brown is a storyteller, a djembe drummer, a banjo and shekere player, a results Coach, and a certified coach facilitator. His passion is in creating positive and heart-driven situations for his audiences to enjoy. Baba Tony believes that storytelling is sacred, and he believes that it can inspire, confirm, validate, and engage the imagination. It is a great way to plant seeds for one’s morality and values.
