Women volunteers are needed to help immigrant women learn English at the Dominican Literacy Center (DLC) in Aurora.
Alison Brzezinski, DLC tutoring coordinator, said she needs 20 women to serve as tutors for Spring classes.
She will lead a training workshop for prospective tutors from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at the center.
Training includes lunch.
The Center is on the grounds of St. Therese Catholic Church, 260 Vermont Avenue in Aurora.
New tutors will help students learn English in 90-minute one-on-one sessions starting January 23.
Teaching experience is not required of tutors.
In addition to Brezezinski, instructors are Dominican Sister Kaleen Ryan, DLC founder/director; and Sister Jane Ann Beckman, citizenship training program leader.
Training includes planning lessons, using textbooks, conducting oral drills, and what to expect at classes.
Tutors receive information on prospective students, including years in the U.S., previous education, and how often a student speaks English both at home and on a job.
Center staff members are available to assist, answer questions. and resolve issues.
Teaching aids available include picture dictionaries and other materials for vocabulary, writing, conversation, grammar, and group activities.
Tutoring sessions are conducted in English. Tutors meet one-on-one with adult students for 90 minutes each week.
Approximately 115 students are expected to begin classes this month.
Tutors and students are required to be vaccinated for COVID-19.To volunteer or for more information, call Brzezinski at (630) 898-4636, send E-mail to Alison@dominicanliteracycenter.org, or visit domlitctr@sbcglobal.net.
