The West Aurora Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce the 2024 inductees: Cory Anderson (wrestling, 1989), Colin Kirk (soccer, 2003), Gary Krattenmaker (baseball, 1973), and Nicki Pieart (basketball/soccer 2000).
Cory Anderson, a standout from the class of 1989, left an enduring athletic legacy. His high school career included being a two-year varsity football starter and serving as co-captain during his senior season, where he earned Honorable Mention All-Conference recognition. In addition to football, Cory excelled in wrestling, securing multiple IHSA State Finals appearances, with a notable 5th-place finish in 1989. His prowess on the mat earned him All-American honors in Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles, representing Team Illinois at the Asics Junior Nationals. Cory continued his wrestling journey at Bloomsburg University, making his mark as a four-year starter. His impressive high school career statistics and remarkable skills solidify his status as one of West Aurora’s finest athletes.
Colin Kirk, a class of 2003 graduate, had a soccer career marked by remarkable achievements, including All-American status and representation in the U.S. National Pool Player selection. Colin played a pivotal role in West Aurora’s historic 2002 fall season, leading the team to their first Sweet 16 finish. He secured IHSA regional championships in his junior and senior years and received All-State Second Team recognition. Beyond high school, Colin continued his soccer journey at Western Kentucky University and later became a successful club coach, guiding United FC to a national championship. His enduring dedication to soccer and community involvement make him a fitting addition to the Hall of Fame.
Gary Krattenmaker, a standout in West Aurora’s baseball history, earned a remarkable 2-year letterman status, served as co-captain, and achieved unanimous All-Conference selection. Leading the team to a third-place State tournament finish in 1973, he ignited a record-setting streak of four consecutive Elite 8 teams from 1973 to 1976. His exceptional 9-1 pitching record, with five State tournament wins, showcased his talent. At Northern Illinois University, Gary continued to excel as a four-year letterman, ranking sixth in career wins, second in single-season wins, and second in single-season complete games. Inducted into the Aurora Boys Baseball Hall of Fame with four championships and three MVP awards, Gary’s legacy in the sport is firmly established. Retired and residing in Aurora today, his journey from West Aurora’s fields to the Hall of Fame stands as a testament to his outstanding baseball career.
Nicki Pieart, a standout graduate from the class of 2000, excelled as both a high school and college athlete, being a four-year varsity soccer player and a two-year varsity basketball player at West Aurora High School. He made a transition to Aurora University, Nicki continued her success as a four-year soccer starter, a three-year captain, and all-conference honoree in 2000. Beyond soccer, she contributed to the Spartans’ NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball in 2002 and in 2004. With a master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University, Nicki pursued a successful career as an athletic trainer for ATI Physical Therapy and worked with the Chicago Bandits before returning to Aurora University in various roles. Currently serving as the athletic director at Lake Forest College and chair of the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sport, Nicki’s athletic background and leadership continue to leave a lasting impact.
The public is invited to attend the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Reception and Ceremony Friday, Jan. 19, 2024. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with a complimentary reception hosted in the Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse of West Aurora High School, at 1201 W. New York Street in Aurora. New members will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame shortly before tip-off of the boys’ varsity basketball game, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.. West Aurora Hall of Fame Committee recognizes outstanding contributions to the West Aurora High School athletic program by a student-athlete, coach, or another individual, which clearly qualifies that person for membership in an elite group. These contributions will have resulted in not only local but regional, State, or national recognition. Additionally, these individuals have demonstrated high levels of character, leadership, and sportsmanship, while representing West Aurora High School.
