The high school sports Winter seasons are jockeying for position, conference and State tournament. The final sports assignments will be completed Thursday, Feb. 14, an unintentional Valentine’s Day gift for some teams, and a perception of a cruel hoax for other teams. The date is the final seeding for Winter sports, the boys Class 4A and Class 3A sectional basketball tournament seeding. The girls regional tournaments in 1A and 2A started last week. The boys 4A, 3A, will begin Monday, Feb. 26 with girls 3A, 4A, and boys 1A, 2A in between. Prior to it, boys basketball will offer some rivalries. The Upstate Eight/DuPage top three teams in each conference will play at East Aurora Saturday.
Host Waubonsie Valley defeated Oswego East, 67-61, Saturday in a big non-conference boys basketball game which will affect the seeding in the East Aurora Sectional. Waubonsie Valley has surpassed 20 victories and Oswego East is on the cusp, following Waubonsie Valley’s 67-58 victory over rival Oswego. Among the teams in contention for top seeds are West Aurora, Waubonsie Valley, Oswego East, Bolingbrook. Geneva is position to be the top seeded team in the Bartlett Sectional.
West Aurora High School won two games last weekend. West Aurora will play DuPage leader Metea Valley Saturday at East Aurora at 5 p.m. in the DuPage/Upstate Eight series. “Metea Valley has some nice athletes and they make you work on the defensive end of the court” West Aurora head coach Brian Johnson said. “They run numerous actions. There is no time to relax.”
East Aurora head coach Rick Robinson: “We are starting to come together and we’ve got all of our players back (following injuries).”
Illinois High School Association reports: The girls gymnastics State tournament will be at Palatine High School Friday and Saturday. Girls regional basketball champions, include in 1A, Aurora Christian and Newark, and in 2A, Lisle and IC Catholic Prep. Girls bowling team sectional champions include Willowbrook, Lockport, and Joliet West. Molly Galvin, Glenbard East, captured a sectional championship.
Hall of Fame inductions in high school sports includes West Aurora and Marmion. See page 12. Oswego will induct 11 athletes Saturday.. The 2009 boys basketball team, second place in the Class 3A State tournament, will be honored. for 10 years.
