Mayor of Aurora, Richard Irvin, left, presents Darius Williams an autographed basketball at Tuesday afternoon’s mayor’s media briefing. Williams, a 2015 graduate of East Aurora High School is organizing a pro-youth, anti-violence, event to help bring the community together. 630 Aurora Alumni Basketball Classic. Williams said he has lost friends to gun violence. The event will feature former Aurora-area high school basketball players competing, a dunk contest, a three-point contest, a D. J., food, prizes, and performances at 3 p.m. Saturday at West Aurora High School. The event is a partnership between Impact Church, Aurora Police Department, and City of Aurora Youth Services, and will be a $3 charge at the door. Mayor Irvin donated the basketball with his autograph and will donate 50 signed smaller novelty basketballs to be given away to youth at the event. Williams received an Award of Excellence for being a young leader with a big vision and having a heart for the community. Simon Rodriguez, Youth Services manager is at the right.
Information was presented about the Indian American Community Outreach Advisory Board’s sixth Diwali Festival of Lights celebration Saturday, Oct. 19, at Metea Valley High School, 1801 N. Eola Road, Aurora. An update was given about the demolition of the former Masonic Temple building in Aurora at Lincoln and Benton Streets.
