The Fox River will welcome hundreds of paddlers, from avid racers to leisure enthusiasts and every level in between, when the 58th running of the Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race will be held Sunday, June 2.
Open to all ages, the Mid-Am will feature two race lengths with start lines in St. Charles, 10 miles, and Batavia, six miles, both to finish with a post-race lunch party and awards ceremony at Prisco Community Center/McCullough Park, 150 W. Illinois Avenue, Aurora.
Anticipation of the race’s arrival is heightened this year, after officials canceled the popular event last year due to the River’s elevated, and potentially dangerous, flow rate.
“We’re excited to once again host and sponsor one of the Midwest’s signature summer events,” said Krista Mulready, race director and Prisco Center facility manager at the Fox Valley Park District. “The race attracts participants from all over the region, and it’s a date that’s been circled on many calendars months in advance.”
With 20 divisions, 11 for canoes, eight for kayaks and an open, non-competitive division, there’s a fit for everyone. Awards will be presented to the top three boats in each division.
“Some paddlers take direct aim at the finish line from the get-go, while others prefer a more leisurely pace to enjoy the scenic views and a little more time on the water with a family member or friend,” Mulready said. “No matter your skill level or preference, there’s a unique spot for everyone. It’s always been a fun-filled experience to kick-off Summer.”
