Two long-time high school rivals met in softball Tuesday at the Fremd Sectional semifinal in Palatine. St. Charles North made up for two earlier losses to St. Charles East. The North Stars rallied to defeat the favored Saints, 7-4.
“We have tremendous respect for East,” said North winning pitcher, Jill Waslawski, 12-7. “We all know and play ball together.”
Waslawski, through seven innings allowing five hits. She banged out two hits to drive home the winning run.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Stars, 19-9, parlayed a walk, three hits, and a couple of errors into five runs. Grace Quinn hit a two-run double to left center to widen the lead to 5-2.
The top-seeded Saints fell to 21-7. Freshman pitcher Katie Arrambide, 17-4, allowed nine hits in seven innings.
The Saints scored two runs in the second inning. Hanna Cozzi, two-for-three, doubled home the first run and Crystal Sparra drove in run number two with a single.
