Saturday, Nov. 1, will begin National Diabetes Awareness Month, observed to raise an awareness about diabetes, its prevention, and its management.

National Diabetes Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the importance of early detection and treatment of diabetes, which can help prevent serious health problems.

Uncontrolled blood sugar (glucose) can cause vision, heart, and dental problems, in addition to nerve and kidney damage. Eat healthy, stay active and have a yearly blood test, to stay diabetes free!

During the month of November, many organizations and individuals work together to educate the public about diabetes and its risk factors. Encouraging yearly screenings for prediabetes and diabetes, while promoting healthy lifestyle habits, such as exercise and a balanced diet.

Sunday, Oct. 26, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Aurora, two of our newest Club members, Hlawn Tlang and Blend Dalipi, held a presentation titled “Let’s Talk about Diabetes.” (See page 11.)

Hlawn and Blend, along with three other undergraduate students from Aurora University, did a research project on diabetes, interviewing 255 individuals to determine how many were aware of the dangers of diabetes.

Upon completion of their research, they put together a video presentation, along with printed materials, enabling them to hold group sessions to discuss diabetes.

Our country has a diabetes epidemic, that can only be solved by bringing groups of people together, highlighting the dangers of uncontrolled blood sugar (glucose).
