This year, the Aurora Historical Society, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving Aurora’s rich heritage, is celebrating its 120th anniversary, Saturday, Oct. 3, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. the Historical Society will hold its Fall fundraising banquet at the Aurora Country Club, 1548 Prairie St., Aurora.
This year’s banquet, called the “Googie Gala,” will have a delicious dinner, a signature cocktail, and silent and live auctions.
The event features the era of Googie-style architecture and signage in the Aurora area, like the iconic Northgate sign. This mid-20th Century futuristic style is characterized by upswept roofs, bold geometric shapes, neon signage, and Space Age motifs reflecting America’s optimism about the future following World War II. Seattle’s Space Needle and the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” sign are two well-known examples of Googie style.
Guests are encouraged to dress in 1960s attire. Think “Rat Pack,” classic Star Trek, the Jetsons, and Pan Am stewardesses.
