DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) honored longtime volunteer Peggy Schwerman with the Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award during its 50th anniversary celebration, recognizing her extraordinary 40 years of service and unwavering commitment to supporting older adults in the community.

Schwerman began volunteering with DSCC in 1986, delivering meals to older adults and conducting essential well-being checks. What began as an opportunity to serve her community grew into four decades of compassion, connection and dedication that have made her a cherished member of the DSCC volunteer family.
Her very first delivery route offered an early glimpse of the personal connections that would become a hallmark of her volunteer service. While delivering a meal, Schwerman struck up a conversation with a recipient and discovered that he had worked alongside her father for several years. Touched by the unexpected connection, she invited him to a surprise 50th-anniversary celebration for her parents. This is only one memorable example of the kindness and thoughtfulness she has brought to her work over the years.
Forty years later, Schwerman’s commitment remains as strong as ever. An active tennis player who takes to the court several days a week, she continues to make time for others. Every Tuesday, after finishing her tennis game, she heads out to deliver meals throughout the Bloomingdale area, demonstrating that her dedication to serving older adults is an enduring part of her life.
“While delivering meals all these years, there have been a lot of really nice and appreciative people. And a lot of situations I never thought I’d be able to get through, but somehow I’ve been given direction and the right words to use, by some higher power, to help me, to help someone in need,” said Peggy.
The Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award was presented as the final award of the evening, recognizing Schwerman’s exceptional service and the lasting impact she has made on DSCC and the individuals it serves.
As DuPage Senior Citizens Council celebrates five decades of helping older adults remain nourished, connected and supported, Schwerman’s story reflects the vital role volunteers play in advancing the organization’s mission. Her 40 years of service stand as a powerful example of how compassion, consistency and a willingness to help can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
