Speaker on self-defense at Aurora Navy League dinner Jan. 15

The Aurora Navy League Council 247 will hold its monthly dinner meeting Tuesday, Jan. 15. The meeting will be held in the private dining room at Grandma’s Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas Road, Montgomery, just north of U.S. Route 30.

The after dinner speaker will be Joe Rosner, a recognized expert on personal safety and self-defense. His topic will be “How to Protect Yourself if Attacked.”

A reception will begin at 5:15 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m.. The dinner includes a choice of three entrees, fish, chicken, or beef, soup or salad, dinner rolls, vegetables, dessert, and nonalcoholic drink. The cost is $20 all-inclusive. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased separately. A fourth, lower cost entree, a dinner salad, may be purchased for $12. It includes soup, dinner rolls, dessert, and nonalcoholic drink.

You do not need to be a member of the Navy League, or have a reservation, to attend the meeting. The general public is welcome. The Navy League is a civilian organization started by president Teddy Roosevelt to provide civilian support for the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and Sea Cadets.

Mr. Rosner’s credentials include military, law enforcement, and professional bodyguard experience, multiple black belts and growing up on the South Side of Chicago. Joe specializes in teaching simple, but effective, self-defense strategies, tactics and techniques that do not require strength, athleticism or extensive practice. His latest, book “Keep Calm and Carry Pepper Spray, was published earlier this year.

Joe and his wife Roz, live in rural McHenry County where they enjoy hiking, flying small airplanes and rehabbing neglected and abused dogs for a shelter. Joe is an altruistic kidney donor and would be happy to talk anyone interested in becoming one too.

The Aurora Council is having a membership drive, and will pay half of the first year’s dues for new members. This is an excellent opportunity to attend an interesting event, and determine whether you would like to join permanently.
