Greg Zanis of Aurora, known as the Cross Man, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, according to his daughter, Susie.

Greg Zanis, of Aurora, writes a name on the top of a cross, for one of 762 homicides in Chicago in 2016. The crosses were part of a prayer vigil at Restoration Church. Restoration Church photo

The family has encouraged friends to show support with an assembly outside of the home at Indian Trail and Church Road from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 1 and to bring signs of thanks and of support when he will look outside. He is known as the Cross the Man because, as a retired carpenter, he made crosses following tragedies such as deaths from accidents and shootings. He has visited many states from the East Coast to the West Coast, including last year’s shootings at Henry Pratt factory in Aurora. Cards and letters are welcome at 1230 Church Road, Aurora, IL 60505. See photo on this page.

• Other important notes: Both the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry and the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry require assistance to help feed unemployed persons, in an addition to the usual need.

• Aurora Interfaith has 11 staff members who wear ventilator masks and gloves to distribute food to those who pull up in cars on Jericho Road (see page 10) within our COVID-19 situation. Executive director Cat Batista said the need has tripled since the COVID-19 outbreak and that it is a struggle to keep its 18,000-square-foot warehouse stocked with food. Help is needed.

• The Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora will hold a Giving Tuesday May 5. Support will include donations of supplies for health-care workers, any financial donaton, gift cards, volunteering.

Clear and concise, week 17:

• To err is to make an error. Too often speakers will use a word which sounds as though it is air, not err, in the commission of error.

• Detail is a noun and not a verb.
