Dear editor;

In November 2023, the Citizens of Aurora, Ill., took a significant step towards embracing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) by being host to its inaugural AI Summit. Organized by Jim Schweizer, lead AI researcher at Aurora-based Global Data Sciences Inc., the event aimed to educate the public on AI technologies and initiate a dialogue pn their practical applications within the City. The summit highlighted the need for Aurora to develop an AI action plan, drawing inspiration from New York City’s recent efforts in this direction.

The first AI summit emphasized the importance of citizen engagement in shaping the future of AI in Aurora. Attendees recognized that although AI holds tremendous potential to improve government efficiency and meet residents’ needs, it poses risks if implemented without proper governance and community participation. Concerns on bias, privacy, and transparency, were at the forefront of discussions, underlining the necessity of a collaborative approach to AI development.

Building upon the success of the first summit, Aurora is gearing up for its second AI Summit in April with an updated agenda that reflects the latest trends and developments in the field. The upcoming event will delve deeper into the role of AI in community development, exploring topics such as intelligent cities, explainable AI, participatory AI, and responsible AI frameworks. The summit will address the growing need for public education and technical literacy programs to help residents understand the implications of AI technologies on their daily lives.

One of the key focus areas of the second summit will be the introduction of the need for an AI ethics board or committee to oversee the development and deployment of AI systems in Aurora in addition to the much-needed AI Action Plan. This aligns with the increasing recognition among governments and organizations worldwide of the importance of ethical considerations in AI implementation. The summit will explore the potential of AI in promoting equity and sustainable development goals, highlighting the technology’s capacity to address pressing societal challenges in an ethical way.

As Aurora continues its journey towards responsible AI adoption, the upcoming summit presents a valuable opportunity for public officials, community leaders, and residents to engage in meaningful discussions and shape the City’s AI action plan collectively. The event organizers extend a warm invitation to all stakeholders to attend the second AI Summit and contribute their insights, concerns, and aspirations for the future of AI in Aurora.

By fostering open dialogue, collaboration, and inclusive decision-making, the citizens of Aurora aim to set a precedent for responsible AI governance at the local level. Our proactive approach to AI planning, with a strong emphasis on community engagement, serves as a model for other municipalities seeking to harness the benefits of AI while prioritizing the needs and values of their residents.

As the second AI Summit draws near, Aurora stands poised to take another significant leap forward in its mission to create a more intelligent, efficient, and equitable future for all.

Jim Schweizer, Aurora
